The Shooter’s Focus Blog

Guides, reviews and straight answers

Our Firearms Buying Guides

Our firearms buying guides are written by people who work the counter every day, not by marketers. Whether you are shopping for your first handgun or comparing optics for a long-range rifle, our firearms buying guides focus on what actually changes your experience at the range.

The Shooter’s Focus is where we write down the things we would otherwise say on the phone twenty times a week. Buying guides, honest product comparisons, maintenance walkthroughs, legal explainers and the occasional argument about calibres. No sponsored posts, no reviews written from a spec sheet.

What you will find here

Buying guides

First handgun, first rifle, first shotgun. What actually matters when you are choosing, what does not, and what the internet insists on that turns out to be noise.

Product comparisons

Two or three options side by side, with the differences that show up at the range rather than on the box. Where one is better, we say which and why.

Maintenance and setup

Cleaning without over-cleaning, torque specifications that stop optics shifting, break-in myths, and how to diagnose a malfunction instead of guessing.

Ammunition explained

Bullet types, what defensive ammunition is actually tested against, why the same calibre performs differently from a short barrel, and how to read a ballistics table.

Legal explainers

Transfers, transport across state lines, storage requirements and NFA basics, written for people who want to stay on the right side of the line without reading a statute.

Skills and training

Dry fire that is worth doing, drills with a measurable score, and what to expect from your first class so you turn up prepared rather than nervous.

How we write

  1. We handle the productsIf we have not used something, we say so and stick to verified specifications rather than pretending to an experience we have not had.
  2. We publish the downsidesEvery product has them. A review that lists none is an advertisement wearing a lab coat.
  3. Nothing is paid forNo manufacturer has ever bought a placement here, and none will. If a piece is prompted by a product we sell, that is stated plainly.
  4. We correct mistakes in publicWhen we get something wrong, the correction goes on the article with the date, rather than quietly editing the sentence.

The best articles here started as a customer question that took twenty minutes to answer properly. If something confuses you, it confuses a hundred other people who did not ask. Send it over and it may well become the next post.

How We Build Our Firearms Buying Guides

Every one of our firearms buying guides starts with a real question we hear at the counter or on the phone. We test claims against what customers actually experience, then write the firearms buying guides in plain language without sponsored bias. If a product is not worth the money, our firearms buying guides say so directly.

Using Our Firearms Buying Guides Before You Order

We recommend reading the relevant firearms buying guides before you add anything to your cart, especially for your first purchase. For additional independent safety and handling information to pair with our firearms buying guides, see the National Rifle Association’s safety resources.

Topics Covered in Our Firearms Buying Guides

Our firearms buying guides are organized so you can jump straight to the category you care about, whether that is handguns, rifles, shotguns, optics, or holsters. New firearms buying guides are added as laws change, new products launch, and readers send in questions we have not answered yet. We also revisit older firearms buying guides whenever a manufacturer issues a recall or a state passes new legislation that changes what we recommend.

If you have a question our current firearms buying guides do not cover, reach out through our contact page and we will consider it for a future post. We would rather our firearms buying guides be genuinely useful than simply numerous.

Who Writes for The Shooter’s Focus

Every writer on this blog also works the sales floor, the range, or the repair bench, so the advice reflects real hands-on time rather than press releases. We test gear ourselves before recommending it, track down manufacturer recalls, and follow changes in state and federal law so readers are not caught off guard. When a topic is outside our expertise, we say so plainly instead of guessing, and we link out to licensed instructors, attorneys, or manufacturers for anything requiring specialized knowledge.

New readers often ask how often we publish. The honest answer is that we would rather post twice a month with something genuinely useful than post daily with filler. Subscribe to updates, check back periodically, or reach out directly if there is a specific topic you would like us to cover in a future article. We read every message and use reader questions to plan upcoming posts.
