Find an FFL Dealer

Your local transfer dealer

Every firearm we sell is delivered to a licensed dealer near you, who checks your identification, completes the federal paperwork and runs your background check. Choosing a good one makes the whole process quick and pleasant. Choosing badly makes it slow and expensive. Here is how to get it right.

Who can receive your firearm

Any holder of a current Federal Firearms Licence who agrees to accept transfers. That includes traditional gun shops, some pawn shops, sporting goods retailers, gunsmiths and a large number of home-based dealers who run transfer services at very reasonable rates. Their licence type matters less than their willingness to do transfers and their opening hours.

How to choose

  1. Search locally firstLook for gun shops, gunsmiths and pawn shops within a sensible drive. Home-based dealers are frequently the cheapest option and are entirely legitimate, though they usually work by appointment.
  2. Call and ask three questionsDo you accept transfers from an online retailer? What is your fee, per firearm or per shipment? What are your hours for a transfer appointment?
  3. Check the practicalitiesCan you get there during opening hours, is parking sensible, and will they call you when a package arrives or expect you to keep checking tracking yourself?
  4. Send us their detailsName, address and phone number. We contact them for a signed copy of their licence and verify it against the ATF listing. Many dealers already have a copy on file with us, which saves a day.
  5. Confirm before you buy, ideallySorting the dealer before you order removes the most common cause of delay in the whole process.

What transfers usually cost

Type of dealerTypical feeNotes
Home-based dealer$20 to $35Often the cheapest, usually by appointment
Independent gun shop$25 to $50Convenient hours, may add a fee per additional firearm
Pawn shop$25 to $50Long opening hours, quality varies considerably
Large retailer$30 to $75Reliable but rarely the cheapest, sometimes slower at the counter
Additional state feesVariesSome states add a fee for a background check or a registration step

Transfer fees are paid to the dealer, not to us, and we never take a cut of them. Ask whether the quoted fee is per firearm or per shipment, because sending two guns to a dealer who charges per shipment can save real money.

Cheapest is not always best. A dealer $10 cheaper who never answers the phone, takes four days to log a package and only opens on Tuesday afternoons is a false economy. Reliability matters more than the fee.

Questions worth asking

  • Do you need me to notify you before a package arrives, or will you accept it either way?
  • How long do you hold a firearm before returning it, and do you charge storage?
  • Do you charge extra for a delayed background check that needs a second visit?
  • Do you require an appointment for the transfer itself?
  • Is there anything my state requires that I should bring beyond photo ID?

What to bring on collection day

  • Government-issued photo ID showing your current address. An outdated address on your licence is the most common reason a transfer is refused at the counter.
  • Any state permit, firearms identification card or purchase licence required where you live.
  • Your order number and, if you have it, the tracking number.
  • Payment for the dealer transfer fee.

If something goes wrong

Dealers occasionally close, let a licence lapse, stop accepting transfers or refuse a package they were not expecting. If any of that happens, contact us straight away. We can redirect a shipment to another dealer, though the carrier may charge a redirection fee and it adds a few days. If a firearm is returned to us because it was never collected, the order is treated as a return and outbound shipping is not refunded, so keep an eye on the dealer holding period.

No dealer yet?

Send us your ZIP code and we will suggest dealers near you that we have shipped to before, with their fees if we know them.

Fees shown are typical ranges observed across the market and are set by each dealer independently. Range Ready Supply does not control or receive any part of a dealer transfer fee.
